Monitoring of landscaping achieved

The Sofiaplan project examines the degree of fulfillment of the requirements for landscaping of the development zones according to the Master Plan. To fulfill the complex task of the study to analyze a territory of 20 956 hectares, in combination with the requirements for relative accuracy (minimum area of 100 square meters), completeness of contents and 15 classes of vegetation, modern sources of information (satellite images) and information technologies were selected such as geographical information systems (GIS).

The benefits of monitoring are:

  • homogeneous result - equal quality, time and green classification throughout Sofia;
  • inclusion in the green balance of Sofia of the inter-block spaces, private yards, industrial sites;
  • monitoring of the 10-year implementation of the Master Plan on the “landscaping” indicator;
  • focusing administration in problem areas.

The spatial distribution and functional classification of urban green spaces are presented on the basis of Sentinel-2A multispectral satellite images freely available under the Copernicus European Earth Observation Program. 8/28/2015 created 100% cloud-free S2A satellite image was used, downloaded from the Copernicus Center for free access to Sentinel scientific data. Data verification was performed on the basis of a visual interpretation of the available satellite image data S2B 2017 and expert evaluation.
